World Book Day 6th March 2025
At Withycombe Raleigh Primary School there is no expectation that children dress up in 'fancy dress' purchased for the occasion. While you are welcome to buy outfits (we know some families are short on time and prefer to order something easy!), we especially love free or low cost hand-made, thoughtful, fun or creative ways to express the theme 'Read Your Way' by coming as a favourite book character. Another low cost idea for children in Key Stage 2 is to wear a plain top (or turn a printed one inside out) and ask friends to write on it to recommend a book!
There are a number of dress up ideas that use what you may already have at home - here are a few popular ones!

-
Choose a book your child is happy to talk about.
-
Start with things you might already have – tracksuits, t-shirts (inside out to make them plain) and pyjamas make a good base for a costume.
-
Focus on the parts of the character that make them stand out - use facepaint or simple props to show these.
Mirabelle (and the Magical Mayhem)
What You Need: A sparkly dress, striped tights, and a magic wand.
Extra Touch: Add some glitter to your face for extra magic.
Dog Man #1: Dog Man by Dav Pilkey
What You Need: Blue clothes, a dog ear headband, and a gold police badge.
Extra Touch: Draw a dog nose and whiskers with face paint.
Do you have a witch outfit left from Halloween?
If so, you could come as:
The School for Wicked Witches by Will Taylor
Or Witch from Room on the Broom
Or Bella Broomstick

What You Need: A black dress, a pointy hat, and maybe a broomstick.
Extra Touch: Carry a spell book or make one from an old notebook.
Matilda by Roald Dahl
What You Need: A blue dress, red ribbon headband, and a stack of books.
Extra Touch: Carry a pretend “magic” object, like a floating spoon.
Mr Bump
Blue top and trousers, a bandage (if you have one) or a ripped up old sheet, or even toilet roll to wind around your child's head and middle.
Little Miss Sunshine
What you'll need:
Yellow t-shirt or jumper, or
Cardboard, Yellow paint and a black pen
Extra touch: Yellow wool for the hair plus some red ribbon for the ties
Do you have a tutu at home?
(or could you make one by tying ribbon or fabric pieces to an elastic belt?)
If so, you could come as one of these characters:
Sparkle Boy
A unicorn from the 'That's Not My Unicorn...'
Angelina Ballerina
Biff from Dogs Don't Do Ballet
Sugarlump and The Unicorn
Mr Twit from The Twits
A fake beard (make one with dark brown wool or paint one on!)
Dark, messy clothes
Extra touch: carry a paintbrush and pot.
Charlie Bucket (Charlie and the chocolate factory)
What you'll need:
Scruffy clothes or an old jumper/cardigan
Extra touch: A golden ticket – use some yellow card or cut out a section of a yellow cereal box, then write 'Golden Ticket' on the reverse side.
Owen Grady from Lego Jurassic World

Checked shirt or plain shirt, gilet, walking/ desert boots, jeans
Extra Touch – you could make an ID badge!
Billionaire Boy

Pippi Longstocking
What you'll need:
Blue dress or dungarees, Red T-shirt or bits of fabric glued on like patches
Stripey tights

You could come as One of the Midnight Gang!
or you could come dressed ready for bedtime reading.

PJs/Onesie (as long as it is warm enough to wear all day)
Extra touch - a real, or fake (drawn on card) pillow!

What you'll need:
White T-shirt, black shorts, backpack, trainers
Extra Touch: White card with Greg's face drawn and cut out as a mask, or use face paints!
