Week of Kindness, 2018 "I met a lovely little boy yesterday at Greenfingers garden centre. The gift he gave me for kindness week is now hanging on the wall. The children sang beautifully and made the visit to Greenfingers one to remember. The children are a credit to your school." (Sent in by Richard Cooper) The whole school took part in Kindness Week from 18th-22nd June, with each class deciding their own way to celebrate the theme. We were delighted to receive some messages from members of the public who had been touched by the kindness shown by some of the children. Kindness week is an annual event for our school, where the children go out into the Exmouth community to offer random acts of kindness. Some children learn songs to sing to people in care homes, or around the town, while others make lovely gifts with special messages on. Mrs Warren leads the Kindness initiative on behalf of the school. As a class teacher, she said of this year's event: "Year 1 really enjoyed our Kindness Week and it was lovely to make so many people smile. Rabbit Class decorated our church with messages of kindness and paper flowers they had made. Barn Owls baked banana/chocolate muffins and handed these out to Withycombe Playgroup. Hedgehogs gave paper flowers to the children too and then we had a lovely time singing with the children. We taught them our frog song and they taught us some new songs too! We still had some muffins left so the children handed these out to people we met on the way back to school; we even popped into the Vets to surprise them!" We received a lovely message from the pre-school visited by Year 1: "Withycombe Raleigh Preschool would like to say a very big 'Thank You' to all the children in Year 1 who visited us as part of Kindness Week. The muffins you made were delicious and we really enjoyed your songs! Thank you for thinking of us and please come again!" Some of the children decorated Smilestones as part of the Exmouth-wide scheme, leaving them around the town to be found and re-hidden - possibly for years to come! We had a message from one parent "My daughter Casey is in Lapwings. Yesterday her little brother found a Smilestone in the ride-on ice cream van outside Tesco. It said "#wrps kindness week smilestone" and I have shared on Exmouth Smilestone Facebook page!" Year 5 children showed kindness to the environment and following on from their sustainability projects they took part in a beach clean, picking up litter and plastics from our lovely beach - followed by a well-deserved ice cream!
